Media and Entertainment Newsletter
Volume 3, Issue 6 See Previous Issues

Thank you for being part of our Media and Entertainment community. We get a lot of nice feedback on this newsletter, but if you’d like to see different content or have any constructive criticism by all means ping us at gregestesme@nvidia.com.

One question we get a lot is about CUDA and OpenCL performance. NVIDIA supports both of these APIs for doing computation tasks on graphics processors ("GPGPU" or general purpose computing on a Graphics Processing Unit). CUDA is developed by NVIDIA and OpenCL is run by the Khronos Group, an industry consortium. Both have their advantages. Because we develop CUDA ourselves, we can innovate very quickly, and our customers can get the best possible performance from our processors. We’d argue we have the best development tools as well. OpenCL on the other hand, runs on our GPUs as well as that of our competitors. This provides users with more choices in the marketplace.

Today, leading companies such as Adobe, Assimilate and Blackmagic Design make versions of their software that take advantage of either CUDA or OpenCL, offering both higher-performance or more choice as the case may be. Still others like The Foundry, GenArts or Cinnafilm currently only offer CUDA versions. In addition, many of our customers also use CUDA for their in-house software development. Visual effects powerhouses like Industrial Light & Magic and Weta Digital create CUDA-based tools for their own use to create fast, efficient pipelines for their artists. Smaller companies and academic institutions are also doing groundbreaking work.

Check out some great talks on CUDA and other media and entertainment subjects from GPU Technology Conference (GTC).
