An Update on the Alps Infrastructure: Opportunities for Weather and Climate Modeling

The Alps supercomputing infrastructure will be the first to deploy the new Grace Hopper Superchip, and is designed to support both simulation and AI-based workloads. Its microservices-based architecture holds much promise to support advanced workflows for extreme computing and big data problems alike. We'll give an update on Alps with recent results and outline future plans with the Grace Hopper-based extension anticipated by end of 2023.

Destination Earth and Digital Twins: A European Opportunity For HPC

Digital twins of our planet aim to deliver a view of the changing Earth with unprecedented detail and accuracy, allowing us to monitor and predict climate change and its impacts on society. They're intended to support policymakers in taking appropriate measures to better prepare for extreme events, mitigate their impacts, and help devise adaptation strategies for important aspects of society. Earth digital twins require substantial investments in digital technology, as they're based on high-resolution simulations, ingest vast amounts of diverse observations, and translate between the physical and the human system. High performance computing and extreme-scale data handling are necessary ingredients, and machine learning promises to be a major contributor to addressing the computing and data challenges so that digital twins will become affordable. We'll provide an overview of both challenges and presently drafted solutions in the context of the European Destination Earth initiative. Destination Earth needs public-private partnerships, and here our collaboration with NVIDIA offers unique opportunities for accelerating progress, therefore helping to address one of the biggest challenges our society is facing with the urgency it deserves.
