NVIDIA Shows First Public Demonstration of New OpenMAX IL Open Standard for Streaming Media Portability

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW (CES)—LAS VEGAS, NV—JANUARY 4, 2006—NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, and The Khronos™ Group today announced the industry’s first public demonstration of the new OpenMAX IL 1.0 standard, also announced today, will be at the Lunch at Piero's press event at 12PM on Thursday, January 5 and Friday, January 6 at CES in Las Vegas.
The demonstration will show a prototype OpenMAX IL implementation executing on an NVIDIA GoForce 3D handheld graphics processing unit (GPU) to create a flexible, accelerated streaming media pipeline to input, decode, and display an MPEG-4 video stream with fully synchronized audio at full frame rate—an industry first. Through using OpenMAX IL, different codecs may be easily inserted into the pipeline, or the configuration of the processing pipeline can be easily changed with full media component and codec interoperability.
The OpenMAX™ IL 1.0 (Integration Layer) specification defines media component interfaces to enable the rapid integration of accelerated codecs into streaming media frameworks on embedded devices. OpenMAX IL is the first of three layers of the overall OpenMAX standard that will provide comprehensive streaming media codec and application portability by enabling accelerated multimedia components to be developed, integrated, and programmed across multiple operating systems and silicon platforms.
