Metro Exodus Enhanced With NVIDIA RTX Ray Traced Effects – See Them In Action In Our Exclusive Tech Video

By Andrew Burnes on August 20, 2018

4A Games’ Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light were among the best-looking single-player action games of their day, wowing players with stunning post-apocalyptic scenes that pushed technology and graphics cards to their limit. In 2019, 4A Games and Deep Silver will launch Metro Exodus, the latest game in the franchise, and we’re proud to announce that the long-awaited threequel will be enhanced with NVIDIA RTX Ray Tracing on GeForce RTX graphics cards.

Specifically, Metro Exodus will feature Ray Traced Global Illumination, for vastly-improved natural lighting, and Ray Traced Ambient Occlusion, for the addition of pixel-perfect contact shadows where objects occlude light. The result is a richer, more immersive, more realistic world, with graphical fidelity that was previously beyond our reach.

For a first-look, check out our exclusive Metro Exodus NVIDIA RTX Ray Tracing tech video below, and if you wish to learn more, keep on reading.

By introducing real-time Ray Traced Global Illumination (RTGI), 4A can have natural lighting from the sun and moon realistically illuminate a scene, and have it genuinely affect the scene as the time of day changes. Before now, this was impossible – GPUs lacked the necessary hardware and performance to calculate real-time ray tracing, and no one had crafted technology and techniques to accelerate the process to such a degree that it could be used in graphically-complex games.

Similarly, we can now render real-time Ray Traced Ambient Occlusion (RTAO) for the first time, which enables us to calculate and display AO’s contact shadowing based on the geometry of the scene. Previously, even the best rasterized techniques were essentially rough approximations, with shadows surrounding an object rather than being based on their specific size and shape, and the materials they were made of.

Frame and Capture Unique In-Game Photos With NVIDIA Ansel

Having worked with 4A Games to craft the most beautiful, technically-advanced game possible, we’re also introducing support for NVIDIA Ansel, to enable you can take personalized in-game photos of the incredible moments and scenes you’ll experience when playing Metro Exodus.

Automatically Record and Share Your Best Gameplay Moments Using NVIDIA Highlights

In addition to NVIDIA RTX and NVIDIA Ansel, we’ll also be including NVIDIA Highlights, so your best gameplay moments will be automatically captured and saved. Then, when you’re finished playing for the day, you can review, edit and share, or even convert them to looped GIFs.

Metro Exodus & NVIDIA RTX: Bringing New Levels Of Fidelity And Immersion To Gamers

When Metro Exodus launches next year, players with GeForce RTX graphics cards will be able to explore 4A Games’ lovingly-crafted world with unprecedented visual fidelity, with immersive lighting and rich, detailed Ambient Occlusion shadowing.
