GeForce 8800 GTX: Celebrating 20 Years Of Gaming And CUDA

By Richard Padilla on November 05, 2026 | Featured Stories Drivers

Few graphics cards have left a mark on PC gaming quite like the GeForce 8800 GTX, which hit shop shelves November 8th, 2006. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, we’re looking back at its gaming and CUDA legacy, and checking out “GeForce 8800 GTX - 20 Years of a Legend”, a downloadable Steam demo from Unreal Engine artist Dylan Browne that leverages the latest technologies to revisit 2006 in unprecedented detail.

For gamers, the GeForce 8800 GTX promised richer worlds, and gave owners the power to play the latest releases at the highest resolutions and detail levels; for developers, it offered a new way to put the GPU to work. Twenty years later, that legacy makes the 8800 GTX a GeForce legend.

The GeForce GPU That Helped Launch CUDA

At the heart of the GeForce 8800 GTX was our G80 architecture with 128 unified stream processors. Instead of dedicating separate hardware to pixel and vertex shading, its unified design could assign resources as needed, accelerating rendering. Alongside DirectX 10 support, that flexibility gave game developers new possibilities for more detailed and dynamic worlds.

It also helped lay the foundation for CUDA, with the GeForce 8800 GTX being the first CUDA-capable graphics card, enabling developers to apply the GPU’s parallel processing power to computing beyond graphics.

With CUDA, developers could break computational problems into smaller tasks for the GPU to process in parallel. Scientific computing, simulation, and video processing could draw on the same parallel power that made GPUs so effective at rendering games. Today, CUDA accelerates and powers the world’s leading applications, with CUDA acting as the foundational computing language linking the most popular software frameworks directly to NVIDIA hardware.

An Unforgettable Era Of PC Gaming

For anyone with a GeForce 8800 GTX, the immediate question was what to play first.

With 768MB of GDDR3 memory and a 384-bit memory bus, the card powered an ambitious generation of games, including Company of Heroes, BioShock, and Crysis. These were games that made a new graphics card feel like an invitation to see what PC gaming could do next.

“But can it run Crysis?” Arriving in 2007, a year after the GeForce 8800 GTX, Crysis pushed PC graphics with its lush tropical environments and became a benchmark for gaming hardware. For many enthusiasts, the game and the card still bring back memories of exploring the island, adjusting settings, and seeing just how far their PC could go.

Our tech demos offered their own glimpses of the possibilities. Cascades filled the screen with waterfalls, Froggy invited players to pull and poke a digital frog, and others showcased advances in skin shading, hair, and facial animation. Sometimes, simply watching a demo was reason enough to gather around the monitor.

GeForce 8800 GTX - 20 Years of a Legend, Now Available On Steam & Coming Soon To GeForce NOW Ultimate

GeForce 8800 GTX - 20 Years of a Legend brings the excitement of checking out a new tech demo back for the anniversary, using path tracing and the latest technologies to render a gamer’s era-accurate room.

Created by Dylan Browne, the developer of Through The Ages, with support from NVIDIA, the semi-interactive demo for GeForce RTX and RTX Spark systems celebrates the thrill of unboxing a new GPU and is available now on Steam and is coming soon to GeForce NOW for Ultimate members. Note: Game Ready Driver 621.14, or newer, is required. Please download and install from the NVIDIA app or our website.

Step into a 2006-era PC gaming room, unbox the GeForce 8800 GTX, inspect it up close, install it in a PC tower, explore the room, and look for nods to GeForce history. Modern GeForce RTX technologies including DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, Path Tracing, RTX Mega Geometry and more bring the nostalgic setting to life in incredible detail, bringing back memories of holding the card in your hands, and the glow of CRTs.

Whether you owned a GeForce 8800 GTX or are discovering it for the first time, there’s a little PC gaming history waiting for you alongside some cool easter eggs to discover!
