GeForce 7950 GX2 FAQ

General

Q: What are you announcing today?
A: Today we are announcing the immediate availability of the NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 dual GPU graphics card - the most powerful graphics card on the market today. GeForce 7950 GX2 also represents the next evolution of NVIDIA Quad SLI for our network of authorized system builders. By installing two of these new NVIDIA® SLI™-Ready GeForce 7950 GX2 graphics cards into an NVIDIA nForce®4 SLI or a new NVIDIA nForce 590/570 SLI-based motherboard, authorized system builders can build Quad SLI systems.

Q: What new features do the NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 graphics cards deliver?
A: The GeForce 7950 GX2 delivers a powerful feature set that includes:

  • Two GPUs working simultaneously on a single card-dramatically raising the bar for single-card performance
  • 48 pixel pipes on a single card
  • 1GB of video memory on a single card
  • Hardware accelerated H.264 support through NVIDIA® PureVideo™ technology-the combination of HD video processors and software delivers a home-theater quality HD video experience to the PC.
  • High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) capable (requires other compatible components that are also HDCP capable)
  • Support for Quad NVIDIA SLI technology-available ONLY in PCs from authorized NVIDIA system builders

Q: What is the fastest NVIDIA solution I can buy?
A: NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 is the highest performing single graphics card on the market.

Two GeForce 7900 GTX graphics cards, in an SLI configuration, produce the fastest dual-GPU solution currently available.

Once you decide which platform is right for you, your selection is dependent on your budget, and whether you want the fastest single card or dual card SLI.

Quad SLI is still the ultimate high-definition gaming platform, but this option is ONLY available through System Builders that use two GeForce 7950 GX2 cards.

Q: How much does the NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 cost?
A: A single NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 graphics card is available in e-tail for approximately $599 to $649. For final pricing please check with an NVIDIA Add-In-Card partner.

Q: Will the NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 solution be faster than a pair of GeForce 7900 GTX cards running in SLI?
A: The NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 is designed to deliver the fastest performance to date from a single graphics card. A single NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2-based graphics card will not be faster than two GeForce 7900 GTX-based graphics cards in an SLI configuration because the clock speeds on the GeForce 7950 GPU are lower than the GeForce 7900 GTX. However, the GeForce 7950 GX2 will significantly outperform a single GeForce 7900 GTX.

Q: Will an NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 solution be faster than a pair of GeForce 7900 GTs in SLI?
A: The higher-core clock speeds on the NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 give it a slight performance edge over the GeForce 7900 GT SLI in most benchmark tests.

Q: Will you be offering other GPUs in a dual-GPU configuration?
A: We cannot discuss unannounced products.

Q: Is this a hard launch with immediate availability?
A: Yes, NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 boards are available today from leading e-tailers.

Q: Will the NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 work with any motherboard?
A: With a properly configured SBIOS, the NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 will work with any PCI Express-compliant motherboard. Please see www.nvidia.com/GX2 for a list of compatible motherboards and SBIOS that have been tested by NVIDIA.

Q: What are the specs for GeForce® 7950 GX2 graphics cards?
A: See the chart below:

GeForce 7950 GX2
Graphics Bus Technology PCI Express
Core Clock 500MHz
Memory Clock 600MHz
Pixel Pipes 48 pixel pipes (24 per GPU)
Vertex Shaders 16 vertex shaders (8 per GPU)
Memory Bandwidth 78.6 GB/s
Memory Configuration 1.0 GB (512MB per GPU)
Memory GDDR3

Q: Can an end user buy NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 and build his own Quad SLI system?
A: No. The model for Quad SLI does not change with GeForce 7950 GX2, it is still exclusively available from system builders. This is the first step in bringing Quad SLI technology to the world.

Q: When will consumers be able to build their own Quad SLI systems?
A: NVIDIA will be announcing plans to bring Quad SLI technology to consumers through other channels in the near future. Today Quad SLI is only offered through select system builders.

Q: Why did you launch Quad SLI with NVIDIA® GeForce® 7950 GX2 with system builders and not in the DIY channel?
The model for Quad SLI does not change with GeForce 7950 GX2; it is still available from system builders. Quad SLI is an extremely high-end solution and as such requires an extremely high-end PC. The high-end system builders have the expertise to put together these types of PCs, which is why we work with them first. This is the first step in bringing Quad SLI technology to the world. We will be announcing plans to bring Quad SLI technology to consumers through other channels in the near future.
