2018 was a great year for indie games.  So many wonderful options to choose from - Dead Cells was a massive hit, along with Battletech and Frostpunk.   All three really defined how indie games can compete with AAA games for play time.  But don’t sleep on games like Torn, MOTHERGUNSHIP, and Rend - these are all solid offerings in their respective categories.

We’re starting 2019 off in a big way, featuring Insurgency: Sandstorm from developer New World Interactive.

Insurgency: Sandstorm
Publisher: Focus Home Interactive
Developer: New World Interactive

Insurgency: Sandstorm is a, team-based, tactical FPS based on lethal close quarters combat and objective-oriented  gameplay, featuring a PvE co-op mode, 3 PvP multiplayer modes as well as ranked competitive matches. Sequel to the indie breakout FPS Insurgency, Sandstorm is reborn, improved, expanded, and bigger in every way.

The game is set in an unspecified, war torn Middle Eastern nation where two teams go head to head, battling for control. On one side are security forces including Western special operations teams and local military. The other side insurgent rebels including mercenaries and clandestine operatives.  Players will experience the intensity of modern combat where skill is rewarded, and teamwork wins the fight.  You can coordinate fire support with your team, engage enemies with vehicle mounted machine guns, and go head to head in small scale high-speed competitive matches.

Players can customize their character in Insurgency: Sandstorm, with a diverse set of clothing, accessories, and character voices. They can also modify their weapons with a variety of attachments and upgrades including optics, foregrips, suppressors, laser sights, extended magazines, quick draw holsters, and more. Other features include a fire support system to call in helicopters, drones, airstrikes, and artillery, drivable vehicles with mounted weapons, advanced reloading mechanics, and more. Plus there are a variety of multiplayer modes to choose from to keep players coming back for more.

Players can choose from three different experiences: Cooperative, Versus, and Competitive. Cooperative features up to eight players playing as either Insurgents or Security taking on challenging AI enemies. Versus gameplay pits two teams against each other in up to 16 versus 16 multiplayer matches where teams must work together to accomplish a variety of objectives. Competitive raises the stakes with a specialized 5 versus 5 mode where players can square off in high tension ranked ladder play. Regardless of what kind of FPS fan you might be, there’s something for everyone.

Insurgency: Sandstorm features both NVIDIA Ansel and NVIDIA Highlights. Performance on the new GeForce RTX 2080 is fantastic, allowing players to experience the game at a smooth 60FPS at 4K.

Response to the game has been extremely positive, with over 4000 positive user reviews on Steam.  The press love the game too:

Kotaku says “Players looking for a hardcore alternative to Black Ops 4 or other games can find it in this game. Insurgency: Sandstorm is tough but incredibly rewarding.”

PC Gamer says “I haven't played a multiplayer shooter as exciting as this for ages, and I'll be coaxing friends into its co-op mode for months to come”.

Insurgency: Sandstorm is available now on Steam.
