Was this the first gaming project that you have worked on?
This wasn’t the first gaming project I have worked on, through RED Central I have worked on different Assassins Creed titles over the last few years, but nothing as tactile as this project.
Did you find any unique challenges or inspiration in working on a gaming project?
I knew what I wanted to do but had no clue on how to achieve it. I follow (on social media) a lot of cosplay creators and one, in particular, had mentioned using hot glue in molds to make interesting finishes to builds. Icing molds for cakes became integral to this build.
What was your inspiration for the mask?
Skulls are awesome! They are a staple of rock music and the heavy metal look, tattooists love them, I love them, I love drawing them, I can’t get enough of skulls! When given the opportunity to customize one of the Skull masks for Ubisoft's Watchdogs Legion I couldn't wait to get stuck in!
I wanted to do something opulent, beautiful, and over the top. 'Memento Mori' came to mind, in the past kings and rulers of old would keep tokens and amulets - usually with a skull motif engraved upon them, as a reminder that they are mortal and will one day die. These were known as Memento Mori. It was a way of keeping the ego in check. I wanted to bring this idea to life in the world of Watchdogs.
What materials were used to create the mask?
Everything but the LED candles on top is made from hot glue.
What was your process to create the Memento Mori mask?
It was like making a jigsaw without the box image, I molded lots of pieces using the hot glue and silicon icing molds and would then proceed to see where the pieces would fit best and making it up as I went along, it was a very organic process, with lots of burnt fingers along the way!
What excited you most about this project for Watch Dogs: Legion?
The sheer scope of what I could potentially create for this project, I could have made several of these masks as I had lots of ideas. The creative freedom was great.
Where can we check out some of your other work?
You can find other examples of my work at RED CENTRAL on Behance and at Dan Shearn on Behance.
