Classic PC games are remembered for their incredible stories, characters and gameplay, but dated visuals can make them tough for modern players to enjoy. NVIDIA RTX Remix changes that. Built for RTX PCs, this modding platform uses cutting-edge path tracing to completely reimagine timeless titles, letting longtime fans and a new generation experience era-defining games in stunning detail.
That’s exemplified today by the release of a new Painkiller RTX update, and the debut of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind RTX, two community-made mods that add DLSS-accelerated path tracing to much-loved games.
Additionally, modders can now add DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation to their creations, further enhancing image quality with better lighting accuracy on all GeForce RTX GPUs.
DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction improves path-traced and ray-traced image quality on all GeForce RTX GPUs in RTX Remix mods, and in games such as Alan Wake 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle™, and PRAGMATA™:

Get started with the next generation of DLSS Ray Reconstruction by downloading RTX Remix from GitHub or the NVIDIA app.
Players can add DLSS 4.5 to an existing mod, though compatibility and quality may vary. Backup the mod files, download the latest RTX Remix Runtime, and copy across the files in the base directory and the .trex directory. Run the mod, press Alt+X in-game, open User Graphics Settings, change the “DLSS Preset” to “Custom”, edit the options to select the latest DLSS 4.5 features, then click “Save Settings”.

People Can Fly’s Painkiller from 2004 was a fast-paced first-person shooter filled with super satisfying weapons that help you slice, dice and impale hordes of monsters across a number of vast, secret-filled levels.
Last year, Merry Pencil Studios’ Painkiller RTX Remix mod swept the board in our $50,000 RTX Remix Mod Contest, impressing everyone with its excellent use of DLSS-accelerated path tracing that enhanced the game’s moody visuals.
Today, Merry Pencil Studios has released a new version of their mod for owners of Painkiller: Black Edition on GOG, with a massive update that takes the award-winning project to another level, fully remastering the first 15 levels with RTX Remix.

Experience brand new high fidelity textures and materials, the latest multi-bounce indirect lighting from our neural radiance cache technology, advanced particle effects for green souls spawned from enemies, path-traced volumetrics that provide more realistic looking fog, the iconic Demon Morph mode powered by Remix Logic, and RTX IO, which has reduced the file size from 57GB to 45GB.
Bethesda Game Studios’ The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind revolutionized role-playing games, introducing a vast open world with advanced visuals, immersive gameplay, and many other innovations that would be refined in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, one of the most celebrated RPGs of all time.
Released in 2002, Morrowind’s visuals are particularly dated in comparison to Oblivion’s, despite there being just four years between their release, such was the pace of graphics development in the early 2000s. For many wanting to go back and try Morrowind after enjoying Oblivion, this gulf in fidelity can be a barrier to entry.
Now, RTX Remix community modder “Gokuwashere” is working to tear down the wall with The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind RTX. As an early work-in-progress vertical slice, this promising project offers a first look at how RTX Remix can transform Morrowind’s distinctive world with modern assets and cutting-edge RTX technologies:

The mod opens with Morrowind’s Seyda Neen starting village and Balmora district, and allows players to explore the updated Mages Guild, which was previously seen in our unreleased 2022 Morrowind test mod. While this early build represents only a small portion of Morrowind’s vast world, it showcases the project’s tremendous potential.
High fidelity textures and materials replace the two decade-old original assets. New foliage and rocks fill out the original sparsely-covered terrain. Volumetric clouds enhance the otherwise empty skies, interacting and interplaying with path-traced lighting to cast shadows. Reflections and object shadows greatly improve the appearance of all scenes, and dramatically improve bodies of water, which back in the day were a showcase for Shader Model 2.0 pixel shaders on early GeForce GPUs. And Remix’s Advanced Particle VFX transform the appearance of magical spells.
Existing, popular community mods are also incorporated, modernizing gameplay, and everything’s accelerated and further enhanced by DLSS 4.5.
You can follow development of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind RTX in the RTX Remix Discord server. And if you want to help mod the entire game, you can contact Gokuwashere here.
