For the last few years, our Corporate Social Responsibility investments in India have been focused on partnering with nonprofits to support biodiversity and the conservation of endangered habitats.

Partnering to Protect Our Environment

Energy Harvest Charitable Trust

This project will reduce air pollution caused by open field biomass burning in 300 acres of farmland in Rajpura, Punjab. Now in its second year, it will save nearly 600 tons of straw from open field burning and prevent emission of tons of CO, CO2, SO2, and ash. An automated fire detection model will show biomass fire points across India. A platform will also be built connecting farmers and biofuel buyers or manufacturers to support biomass trading capability so it can become self-sustainable. This will promote village-level entrepreneurship by integrating farmers into the paddy straw value chain and supporting straw-based constructions.

Foundation for Ecological Security

Restoring, managing, and conserving degraded forests through conservation activities will promote natural farming in nearly 500 acres of land in Koraput, Odisha. This will ensure food availability in 50 villages covering 2,500 tribal households.

One of the outcomes of our renewed support to this initiative for the past year is the increased forest cover and more resources available in the form of non-timber forest produce (NTFPs). The forest streams not only have more water than before, but also provide water for a greater part of the year.

Naandi Foundation

This project will build resilient farming communities in the remote Araku valley, in Andhra Pradesh. It’s training 3,000 farmers through Farmer Field Schools in sustainable organic regenerative practices to earn better income by cultivating coffee and pepper. This will benefit the tribal communities with better soil health, improved quality of yield, and increased farmer skills. The initiative has been supported for two years and the previous efforts have trained the same set of farmers across 115 villages that resulted in the production and distribution of nearly 34,000 kilograms of coffee fruit.

S M Sehgal Foundation

Increasing water availability through replenishment of a water tank and setting up 15 farm ponds will change lives in Kolar, Karnataka. The water structures will improve surface storage up to 38.9 million liters and increase the groundwater table to improve water availability for drinking, household, and irrigation purposes. The 25,980 cubic meters of quality silt made available from these water structures to the farmers will enrich soil, enhance productivity and increase the annual income of farmers.

Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society

This project will restore the ecological conditions of over 12 acres of mangroves in the Sundarbans, West Bengal. It will not only strengthen the capacity of farmers, fishermen, and women of Self-Help Groups (SHG) on conservation and sustainable management of mangroves. It will also be training 1,125 community members on disaster response to build community resilience. As a result, the coastal communities will be protected against future climate-induced disasters using nature-based solutions.

Udyogini

The initiative will restore 30 acres of fallow land and train 600 Himalayan villagers—especially women—in sustainable harvesting, cultivation, and the monitoring of endangered Medicinal Aromatic Plants (MAP) species. This will reduce pressure on the ecologically fragile system due to the unsustainable harvesting of MAPs. As a part of this project, nurseries will be set up that will help promote alternate livelihoods in the community.

Enhancing Forest Cover and Livelihoods

With support from NVIDIA, Grow-Trees.com planted 127,000 trees to increase forest cover, reduce man-animal conflict, and improve the livelihoods of tribal communities in the Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Nonprofit Saahas, with funding from NVIDIA, implemented a solid-waste management project in Bengaluru, Karnataka, that benefitted 5,200 low-income households and reduced land, air, and soil pollution.
