Justice, One Of China’s Most Popular MMOs, Enhances Its World With Ray Tracing and DLSS

At GTC China 2018, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang took to the keynote stage to reveal that popular Chinese MMO Justice will soon be enhanced with cutting-edge real-time ray tracing effects, and our performance-enhancing Deep Learning Super Sampling technology.

A week earlier, GeForce RTX graphics cards users experienced Battlefield V’s ray tracing effects, and DLSS’s performance benefits in a new version of the Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition benchmark. And now, Justice is simultaneously utilizing both ray tracing and DLSS to deliver a superior experience for players.

Specifically, NVIDIA RTX Ray-Traced Reflections will gift armor, weapons, objects, puddles, rivers, canals, and many more game elements with lifelike reflective properties, enabling them to accurately reflect the game world around them.

And with NVIDIA RTX Ray-Traced Shadows, the limitations of traditional shadowmap techniques will be overcome, enabling large complex interactions, real-time translucent shadowing, and the use of area light sources, leading to larger penumbras and physically correct contact hardening, allowing shadows to become sharper as they get closer to the object casting them.

Together, these and a plethora of other techniques enable the rendering of ray-traced shadows at a level of detail beyond that was possible or previously seen.

In addition, Justice is the first game in the world to feature real-time ray-traced caustic effects. As demonstrated by the interactive comparison below, caustics are light rays re-focused or scattered after hitting reflective or refractive surfaces, which in turn create a new light source that can illuminate the surroundings and cast shadows. This ensures that caustic effects react appropriately to objects, changing scenery and lighting conditions, and even wakes of boats.

And finally, to maximize performance, Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) is employed at 4K and 25x14. It boosts performance by a significant degree, can improve image quality, and its anti-aliasing has better temporal stability and image clarity compared to commonly-used Temporal Anti-Aliasing (TAA) techniques. In Justice, DLSS accelerates performance by up to 40%, giving GeForce RTX GPUs up to 90% faster performance compared to previous-generation GeForce GPUs. And in terms of image quality, it can make detail clearer and sharper, as demonstrated by the image below, which directly compares DLSS and TAA:

Ray tracing is the latest evolution of game graphics, and like other groundbreaking effects before it, it will become a key feature of games, creating lifelike scenes that are otherwise impossible to render. DLSS, meanwhile, helps deliver up to 2x the performance of previous generations, and superior anti-aliasing that overcomes the limitations of temporal anti-aliasing. Already over two-dozen games have committed to adding DLSS, and there are even more integrations in progress that have yet to be announced.
