Gain A Competitive Edge in PUBG with 144+ FPS Gameplay

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) helped define the battle royale genre when it broke into the scene back in 2016. Since its initial release, PUBG has topped Steam’s concurrent player charts and has become one of the most played competitive games on the market.

In such a highly competitive title, it’s important to take advantage of every edge you can get - finding the right weapon and tier 3 armor early on can give you a great in-game advantage, but you can also leverage your PC’s hardware to get 144+ FPS and unlock your aiming potential.

Having a high-refresh monitor and a GPU capable of pushing 144+ FPS grants a number of benefits to any player. The first of these is lower system latency. System latency is the time that passes between a mouse movement or a keypress and when the screen updates with this new information. As you can imagine, having lower latency means you can see and react to targets sooner.

Another benefit of high FPS gaming is smoother animations. When you increase the number of frames being displayed per second, there are smaller gaps between each movement on the screen. When you move up from 60 to 144 or 240 FPS, enemy movements will appear more fluid, allowing you to more easily stay on target. 144 FPS For Competitive Play

As you might imagine, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a resource-intensive game that can be very demanding on even the best hardware available. This is due to a number of factors, such as the sheer size of the map and the number of trees, buildings, and other objects that are realistically rendered throughout. You also have to take into account the fact that there are as many as 99 other players in the zone, all of whom you’re trying to spot, regardless of how far away they might be. In order to enjoy the benefits of high FPS, you will need a powerful GPU.

Because of these considerations, PUBG Corp. recommends players use a GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER for a great competitive experience with a solid, consistent 144 FPS at all times.

Optimizing PUBG’s Settings For 240 FPS

For those competitive gamers who wish to get maximum FPS, we have carefully researched the effect that each graphics setting has on both gameplay and performance to find the optimal configuration for competitive play. PUBG tournaments, like the PGS, as well as professional esports players, use GeForce RTX 2080 and 2080 Tis to reach max frame rates.

At home, if you have a top tier GeForce RTX GPU, such as the GeForce RTX 2070 or better, and a top tier CPU like the i9-9900K, you can make the push to 240 FPS by using our tuned esports settings.

Achieving 240 FPS can depend on your in game situation, the map you’re on, and any game changes in recent updates. Furthermore, using max FPS settings does come with a few trade offs: effects like explosions will have reduced image quality, shadows and edges will be a bit blockier, and overall terrain quality will be reduced. If you still want to push for 240 FPS gameplay, follow the steps below:

1.  Set your resolution to 1920x1080 and make sure your display is running at the maximum refresh rate.
2.  Next, set your Render Scale to 90, and use the in-game graphics settings below:

3. After exiting the game, you’ll want to add some sharpening in the NVIDIA Control panel. This will help cancel out some of the visual quality loss from where we changed the Render Scale.
        a. Open NVCPL (right-click the desktop, select NVIDIA Control Panel)
        b. Select “manage 3D settings”
        c. Select “Program Settings”
                    i. Uncheck “Show only Programs found on this computer”
                    ii. Select both PLAYERUNKNOWN’s BATTLEGROUNDS
        d. Turn on Image sharpening with default settings, with this driver (or a newer GeForce Game Ready Driver)

e. Apply and close the NVIDIA Control Panel

If you use the settings outlined above, you should notice a significant increase in your FPS the next time you go after that coveted chicken dinner. The framerates you achieve will vary depending on the components in your machine, so be sure to tune your hardware for maximum performance by killing unnecessary services, closing perf-sapping programs, and overclocking your CPU, RAM and GPU.

High FPS Results

After digging into the benefits that we’ve outlined above, we spent time studying K/D ratios in both Fortnite and PUBG to see their correlation to high-FPS gaming. If you want a deep dive into what we found, you can read our full study on playing battle royale titles at high FPS.

Over the past six months, we have spent time pouring over this data and found some other interesting trends related to the amount of time a player spends in a game. As you can see in the chart below, whether you are a weekend warrior or an aspiring professional, there is a correlation between better performance and higher FPS regardless of how much time is spent playing.

When all of the available information is looked at as a whole, we can conclude that there is a strong correlation for higher FPS helping maximize your potential in battle royale games like PUBG.
