2019 has already been a great year for PC games, and it’s certainly not slowing down! We’ve seen some incredible releases across the board from big AAAs through to the ever-intriguing indie developers, and the strategy genre in particular continues to grow in richness and diversity.

This month we’re going to take a look at the latest version of the popular Tropico series, Tropico 6.

The Tropico series is a City building / Dictator Simulation Game where players have always played as either a ruthless dictator or a benevolent leader of the people tasked with managing the growth of the eponymous Tropico island. Players will build infrastructure, residences, businesses, and other elements to grow and maintain the island. You’ll rule with fear or goodwill. The decision is up to you.

Tropico 6 was developed using Unreal Engine 4, which lets your tropical island look better than ever before in the history of the series. Limbic Entertainment, the developers of Tropico 6, also added NVIDIA Ansel to the game, allowing players to take breathtaking in-game photos from a variety of angles and places throughout the game. Take a look at some Ansel screen captures throughout the article below.

A number of new features have been added to the franchise. Players can now manage multiple islands at one time, raid wonders and monuments from other lands, build bridges and tunnels to connect your islands, and customize the look of your palace.

Each of the new features provides a specific benefit to your economy and infrastructure.

Where previous iterations of the game largely locked the player to a single island, now budding Presidentes can use brand-new transport options to expand their empire across the waters and bring prosperity to every inch of their multi-island paradise. The introduction of additional islands adds not only a new creative look to the game, but also presents a new strategic challenge. The archipelago layout of the new Tropico requires players to plan ahead as they develop their island economy, and consider the infrastructure of their island nations in a new way.

The introduction of Wonders and Monuments can provide a real boost to your Tropican tourist industry as visitors flock from far and wide to see your definitely-not-stolen landmarks. In addition, the Wonders and Monuments grant certain benefits for Tropico. The Hagia Sophia, for example, will prevent your citizens from dying due to bad healthcare, while the Statue of Liberty makes sure that all immigrants who arrive in Tropico are 100% happy and approve of El Presidente.

Connecting the islands via bridges and tunnels generates additional income by allowing inter-island trade of goods and services, which again, provides additional means of playing deeper into the game.

The game features a tutorial, a single player campaign, a sandbox mode, and multiplayer for up to 4 players. The tutorial is extremely detailed and provides great information to learn how to play the game. Players can skip the tutorial and just jump into the single player campaign if they so choose. The missions are designed well, so players will still learn the ropes early on.

Not surprisingly, Tropico 6 has been a big hit. Fans are loving the game with a Very Positive user score on Steam from over 2600 ratings. The press is also loving it:

Shacknews gave the game 9/10 and said “Tropico 6 is the best game I've played all year.”

Gamespot gave the game an 8/10 and said “Tropico 6 builds on strong foundations, honing detail and offering expansive new sandboxes in which to craft your ideal island nation.”

IGN gave the game a 7.3/10 and said “The amount there is to do and the depth of its political mechanics make Tropico 6 stand out over its immediate predecessors.”

Tropico 6 is available now on Steam.
