Behind the scenes, Zalando relied on repeated studio shoots for different formats and markets, which were time‑consuming, expensive, and difficult to adapt quickly for new campaigns. Early 3D experiments existed, but they sat outside the main workflow, took about three times longer than the new approach, required specialist skills and manual modeling, and didn’t scale across hundreds of thousands of SKUs. Visual quality was inconsistent, and teams still needed separate shoots and asset pipelines for product pages, marketing, and other channels.
Against this backdrop, Zalando set out to give customers a clearer, more realistic view of products before purchase, helping them make more confident decisions and reduce returns—starting with the high‑impact footwear category. The team wanted to move beyond static imagery into richer visualization—interactive 3D, video, and immersive experiences—that feel closer to an in‑store view.
To make that vision viable, Zalando needed a scalable 3D asset pipeline rather than isolated pilots. The company also wanted to automate image and video creation from 3D assets and build a reusable digital‑twin foundation to support future generative AI and immersive commerce experiences.

To address these challenges, Zalando integrated ALLSIDES’ AI‑powered photometric 3D scanning platform into its content production pipeline, with NVIDIA GPUs providing the compute backbone. ALLSIDES’ scanners capture products in a controlled multi‑view setup and generate high‑fidelity digital twins that accurately reflect geometry, materials, and color, with each footwear scan taking around seven minutes.

Instead of commissioning new shoots for each use case, they request a scan and derive the formats they need—product images, video, lifestyle content, or virtual try‑on—from the same digital twin.
This “scan once, use everywhere” model enables Zalando to move from capture to campaign‑ready 3D content in as little as 48 hours. It speeds planning and execution, keeps visual standards consistent across brands and markets, and lowers overall cost even with more enhanced product detail pages. Brand partners selling on Zalando also benefit from richer product presentation without producing their own 3D assets, and ShopAR is offered as a B2B service to extend these capabilities across markets.

Operationally, the 3D pipeline is built for high volume and speed. Between April and December 2025, Zalando produced 10,000 footwear SKUs in 3D and plans to deliver a further 35,000 in 2026, targeting 45,000 3D footwear assets overall.
