Our NVIDIA-based platform is eliminating the traditional obstacles to protein crystal imaging. We believe NVIDIA's constant innovation in the field of graphics in combination with its user-friendly development tools will lead to even more rapid processing without requiring us to change a line of code. The powerful solution will help laboratories find protein crystals in a more efficient, automated fashion, ultimately resulting in the faster creation of targeted drugs that can improve and save lives.

Proteins are molecules made up of amino acids that are needed for the body to function properly. Analyzing the 3D structure of proteins provides insight into their physiological functions, facilitating the design of efficient drugs and therapeutic agents. A primary method of exploring protein structures is through crystallography. In crystallography, a protein is coerced into a crystal, which requires thousands of experiments to achieve. Traditionally, each of these experiments is screened by the human eye to detect protein crystals.

To automate this process, researchers are using vision- and image-processing technologies. Axygen Biosciences developed an advanced image-processing algorithm that utilizes dozens of Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs), cross-correlation, and other non-linear filtering on four-megapixel images. This algorithm had been difficult to implement because of processor speed limitations and the high cost of dedicated systems. To solve these issues, Axygen Biosciences turned to NVIDIA to reduce processing time by a factor of ten. Powerful NVIDIA SLIā„¢ Technology (Dual and Quad) provided an additional 1.7 to 3.5 x acceleration, resulting in almost real-time calculations.
