The data-centric world is challenging the IT infrastructure industry's current status quo. Remote data memory access (RDMA), already proven in the high-performance computing (HPC) market, is making early in-roads in enterprise infrastructure to address a common set of problems. Join this session to learn how RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) will play a key role in addressing future data-centric challenges. Find out how VMware vSphere embraces RDMA technology to enable various use cases, such as VMware vSAN, artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), HPC, and business-critical application workloads on cloud deployments powered by VMware. We will also talk about how to consume RoCE in a virtualized environment, and some of the networking challenges and future enhancements to be addressed to make RDMA adaption more mainstream.

Having to do more with less has become a standard for IT administrators. One way to get more with less is to use the same host for both VDI and Machine Learning (ML). How is this possible? There are a number of ways to do this. In this session we will explore one way to do this with a simple script that monitors the load of an environment to intelligently deliver both VDI and ML resources. This gives administrators the ability to provide more business value with less.

PKS solutions need to be extended to support container-based access to GPUs for machine learning (ML), but any extension of PKS worker nodes seems all but impossible for the VI admin. But armed with the right knowledge, things get much easier. Join this session to learn how to extend any VMware Essentials PKS or VMware Enterprise PKS cluster to provide container-based GPU access for more efficient ML development and inference execution. In fact, the strategy used will work for any software extension needed at PKS worker nodes. We will go through a step-by-step demo (from a VI admin's perspective) of an automated means of adding GPU support to PKS that doesn't break VMware support and survives automated PKS upgrades. All of the automations are open sourced by VMware for use by VI admins as they move forward with this new knowledge.

We are in a new phase of computing evolution, where traditional CPU and networking technologies are no longer sufficient to support the next-generation research computing, engineering, and science workloads. Infrastructure needs to keep pace with the compute requirements for the exceedingly complex computational models that are associated with extremely large data-sets. The ability to share accelerators and high-speed interconnects through virtualization is mandatory to achieve the speed, efficiency, and higher performance required for these workloads. The use of RDMA-based interconnect accelerators may greatly increase the performance of high-performance ML workloads, where RDMA helps decrease latency and CPU utilization for these data-centric workloads. We will present the basics of RDMA (concentrating on IB & RoCE) and explain how it is able to deliver these performance enhancements. We will describe the different approaches available for running RDMA based workloads on VMware vSphere using technologies such as virtualized GPUs and PVRDMA. We will demonstrate how ML applications can utilize the full potential of RDMA, interconnect and hardware accelerators, while retaining the benefits provided by virtualization, such as vMotion and snapshotting. The discussion will showcase performance results for real Machine Learning and Big Data workloads running on VMware vSphere.
