SWA Shanghai has improved the efficiency and quality of landscape design by leveraging NVIDIA AI and NVIDIA RTX™ technology. By combining DLSS Frame Generation and Super Resolution technologies into their workflows, the SWA Shanghai designers tapped into new levels of fidelity. Employing NVIDIA RTX 5000 Ada Generation GPUs and D5 Render allowed the team to view models under various conditions in real time. Explore how SWA addresses challenges with DLSS and RTX for high-quality, AI-enabled visualization.
Design companies around the world are exploring how to bring advanced technology into their workflows to improve quality and efficiency. SWA Group, based in the United States, is a multinational firm working on landscape design for 65 years. SWA Shanghai, established in 2011, is its full-service design office located overseas.
In the large-scale design project of Mountain Dalanglitou Country Sports Park in Longhua District, Shenzhen, the 3D process faced multiple challenges, such as bearing capacity, stability, and smooth operation. In addition to the huge model itself, the various high-detail 3D materials in the scene placed higher requirements on hardware carrying capacity.
At every stage of the project, the SWA Shanghai team needed to communicate closely with customers and discuss the details of solution optimization based on the renderings. Due to the limitations of modification and output efficiency, the team can only spend more time on program modification. They outsource rendering work to other companies, but it is difficult to avoid problems like high costs and uncontrollable rendering effects.
SWA Shanghai used NVIDIA RTX 5000 Ada Generation GPUs and D5 Render to build a new real-time visualization workflow that improves landscape design efficiency and effectiveness.

The artist can adjust the environment's atmosphere in real time.
D5 Render supports NVIDIA DLSS, bringing a new instantaneous experience to architects, designers, and 3D artists, improving the efficiency and overall experience of SWA Shanghai's creative process.
DLSS leverages Super Resolution Sampling, allowing the SWA Shanghai team to enhance live image clarity and rendering speed. The designers also experienced improvements in latency and smoothness. This process greatly improved the performance of D5, allowing SWA Shanghai designers to work with larger scenes, higher-quality models, and textures without sacrificing speed or interactivity.
The SWA Shanghai team also needs to repeatedly adjust the environment and later parameters. Thanks to the smooth interactive experience brought by NVIDIA DLSS, the results can be fed back to designers immediately.
DLSS allows users to create more frames with the power of AI and improve image quality, taking real-time graphics to new levels of fidelity and interactivity. As a result, the team has demonstrated more possibilities in a tight time frame.
To improve productivity and stability, SWA Shanghai leverages the power of NVIDIA RTX to optimize workflows for large and complex projects while improving design and customer experiences.
The RTX 5000 GPU is powered by the cutting-edge NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture. Third-generation RT Cores offer over 2x the throughput of the previous generation, delivering incredible speedups for photorealistic rendering of architectural design evaluations. Through NVIDIA RTX and real-time rendering software, the team observed the effect of the model under different angles and lighting conditions almost instantly. The improvement of interactivity makes the team more efficient in the design and review process.
After completing the preliminary model, SWA Shanghai imports it into the D5 Render. The adjustments to lighting and other parameters are visible on the spot, which can help better control the relationship between the model’s volume and light. The team can also discover problems in a timely manner, make quick judgments, and provide clear directions for model modifications.
The artist is able to manage materials by layer to observe the design hierarchy clearly.
The RTX 5000 also has 32GB of GDDR6 graphics memory and supports error code correction, enabling SWA Shanghai to easily handle large, complex landscape design projects and use high-precision landscape 3D assets and textures smoothly, increasing scene loading capacity.
The total design area of Mountain Dalanglitou Country Park is 2.34 million square meters, which is a large-scale landscape design project. Using the large video memory from the RTX 5000, the team deployed 249 high-precision plant models in its “Zero Carbon Lab” project. The model's triangular surface reached 400 million, but the real-time rendering was still stable at 45 frames per second.

Using RTX-accelerated ray tracing technology in the D5 Render can greatly improve rendering output efficiency. After receiving optimization feedback, the team can make adjustments without delay to the scene and independently output renderings from different angles.
During the project design phase, SWA Shanghai frequently performs the "adjustment-drawing-reporting" process. D5 and NVIDIA RTX's efficient rendering greatly saves time and cost.
The D5 scene of "Tree Museum" of Mountain Dalanglitou Country Park contains 720 million model triangles. With the RTX 5000, the rendering time of a 3840x2560 image takes only 1 minute and 28 seconds at the same resolution. And the 6-second video only takes 5 minutes and 22 seconds.
Compared to traditional workflows, the bird's-eye view of large scenes can also be 5–10X faster, rendering images quickly to cope with the frequent "communication-modification-output" requirements at this stage and reduce the consumption of resources and time.
Using NVIDIA DLSS and the RTX 5000 in their workflows, SWA Shanghai broke through traditional design processes to revolutionize internal workflows while providing customers with better service.
The SWA Shanghai team handled projects of various scales during the creation process, ensuring stable scene operation without sacrificing the concurrent effects and experience of visualization software. Moreover, the resulting smooth operation improved the designer's productivity. The team was able to communicate with customers on the same frequency in a more intuitive way, refining the design based on clear ideas from both sides, avoiding repetitive rework, and enabling efficient visualization processes.
