In this introductory section of our 2013 Global Citizenship Report, our chief executive officer and our executive vice president of operations share our company’s approach to sustainability. They discuss the opportunities, successes and challenges we have faced and will face in the future.
This section also contains an overview of NVIDIA’s priority areas related to sustainability where you can learn how we interact with stakeholders and subsequently integrate their feedback into our overall sustainability approach.
We have a long history of building energy-efficient products, but our first opportunity to make a public commitment to sustainability came in 2006. At the request of a key customer that wanted us to become designated as a “green partner,” we undertook our first ISO14001 (Environmental Management Systems) audit. We have received zero negative findings since that time.
ISO14001 certification required us to set environmental goals across our organization, so we used it as an opportunity to gather a Green Team composed of employees across the company whose every day roles involve helping us meet our goals. Shortly thereafter, our focus expanded to include supplier responsibility, greenhouse gas measurement and efforts to communicate the social impact our customers were making by employing our innovative technologies.
In 2012, we ratcheted up our efforts by naming a Social and Environmental (SER) Committee to address the larger scope of these sustainability issues. Six executive staff from our legal, operations, human resources, information technology and engineering departments meet to review the committee’s goals and help strategize on sustainability positioning and initiatives.
We know that our customers and end-users share our desire to seek sustainability, and we continually work to meet their expectations. Although we have a lot of work left to do, we’re proud of the progress we’ve made to date. So far, we have:
- Ranked No. 6 in the Newsweek Green Rankings.
- Earned a score of 82 (out of 100) in the Carbon Disclosure Project.
- Become the first IT company to receive greenhouse gas assurance of our global emissions.
- Developed a B+ level sustainability report using the Global Reporting Initiative’s index. (In 2013, NVIDIA will request an Application Level Check from the GRI).
Our commitment to excellence in social and environmental responsibility matches our commitment to design excellence in our ever-expanding product line. We invite you to peruse this report in its entirety to gain a comprehensive view of the many steps we are taking, and plan to take in the coming years, to achieve global sustainability.
