2011 Campus Goals

Description
Energy Efficiency
Re-evaluate environmental goals (energy, water, waste) for both data center and non-data center facilities
Set new, improved target for non-data center reductions and determine more efficient metric for tracking emissions for data center facilities
Implement carbon tracking and energy management system. Enter all office information into the system and evaluate data over remaining quarters to pinpoint future projects
Hara Energy Management software implemented as of Q1 2011.
Begin tracking energy usage in all international offices
Engage field office managers to collect and input data into Hara system
Sub-meter 10 largest computer labs to better identify energy savings
To more accurately track waste, report findings to lab managers and determine areas for improved efficiency
Launch Lab Optimization Pilot Program
Allocate dedicated person to conduct lab efficiency analysis with lab managers and determine areas for improvement
Replace chemical-based water systems in four main buildings with water softener to keep HVAC cooling towers clean

Data Center Goals
Expand Virtual Machine(VM) infrastructure in headquarters data centers
Implement program called 'Try VM First' to encourage usage of virtualization in all corporate development, quality assurance, and staging environments
Establish Virtual Machine infrastructure in India and Hong Kong
Hong Kong VM farm is targeted to go live by end of Q2 2011. Bangalore is targeted to be online by Q3 2011
Develop and implement a method for monitoring computer utilization across all corporate servers
Program will enable data center operations team to:
- Review historical utilization data for system
- Refresh targets and evaluate feasibility of VM migration
- Identify low-utilization systems that can be virtualized and their still-useful hardware that can be reclaimed and repurposed.
Raise temperature of 100 labs by 2°C.

Implement software application to power down hardware when servers are not in use in labs in Santa Clara, Calif., and Moscow, which together have 800 servers.

2011 Silicon (Chip) Operations Goals

Description
Review of the Dodd-Frank Act (Section 1502) for Conflict Minerals
Be prepared to collect smelter information from suppliers, if necessary, and provide to EICC as part of the Conflict Free Smelter (CFS) audit program once SEC rules on Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Act are final.
Begin requesting silicon operations suppliers to source only from confirmed CFS
As the EICC CFS audit program rolls out through 2012, we will request our suppliers to source their tantalum, tin, tungsten and gold only from confirmed CFS.
Monitoring key suppliers for employee workplace practices
Use EICC Validated Audit Process to ensure suppliers are following EICC code with regards to employee workplace practices
Request suppliers to collect water usage data at each of their facilities
We have requested our suppliers to track their water usage in their production facilities. This includes understanding the source, usage, treatment, recycle, discharge standards and impact on their water footprint in the region. The goal is to help identify and reduce excess water usage, improve water discharge quality, and improve the quality of life in the region where these facilities are located.
