FAQ

What is MXM?
MXM stands for Mobile PCI Express Module. MXM is a consistent graphics interface for PCI Express notebooks, enabling fast time to market and configurable graphics solutions for notebook PCs.  Co-designed with the industry's leading notebook designers and manufacturers, MXM delivers the flexibility and upgradeability of interchangeable graphics cards to the mobile computer market.

Is NVIDIA trying to make MXM an industry standard?
Not specifically but the advantages of MXM improve with widespread use, which we and our customers are interested in. The advantages of a consistent interface are tactically of primary interest. NVIDIA is consolidating all of the proprietary interfaces in the market to one consistent interface, which tactically will accelerate notebook time to market and flexibility. It is an open spec and available to anyone. At some point in the future, NVIDIA would be fine with turning over the spec management to a standards committee,  if necessary.

Is MXM exclusively NVIDIA?
Absolutely not, the value of MXM is that it works for all graphics products.

Does MXM mean user upgradeable graphics?
MXM was designed from the beginning to support upgradeable graphics. However, the benefits of MXM extend far beyond field upgradeability—MXM reduces the engineering burden for the entire industry by leveraging IHVs reference engineering designs.  This allows faster time-to-market for the latest graphics products. Some implementations of MXM will be field upgradeable, but many will not, depending on the platform implementation.

Will NVIDIA manufacture and sell MXM boards?
No, NVIDIA will continue to ship discrete chips for the mobile market.  Then notebook manufacturers who implement MXM designs can put the chip on an MXM module.

How much will MXM modules cost?
The notebook manufacturers will build the modules for their respective notebooks and as always, NVIDIA does not release chip prices.
